Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium

One of our very favorite places to go here in Eastern NC has always been the aquarium!  Our little shark lover and his siblings LOVE going to visit their favorite underwater animals.  We thought the cousins would enjoy going again as well.  (You know we drug them there PLENTY of times during our last stay here!)  I suppose it was all new for Sarah though!

Here in Eastern NC, we grow them bullfrogs BIG!

 And the Salamanders are MEAN!
I was horrified to find these two, one with the other in some kind of choking death grip.  The animal world is harsh.  I'm happy to live in my happy little bubble where I don't have to admit that things like this happen all the time.

Mama!  'Nother gator got in the house!

 Don't worry!  I'll get 'em!

Sarah had the same enthusiasm for the touch tank as Amelia did when she was little.
Need to catch a stingray!

Something new for the summer was a penguin exhibit.
They weren't as much fun as one might think.
Apparently when penguins molt, they just stand around, looking crabby and do nothing.

Another new thing for the aquarium was this really cool bird show.
If you've met Abby in person, you know that she LOVES birds.  The bigger the better.
If they are predatory birds, even more better!  Hawks, Falcons, Owls, she loves them all!  The first time we visited the aquarium since moving back here, she really wanted to go to this show, but with the cousins were coming, we decided to wait until they were here with us.  Abby found the primo spot right underneath this bird perch.

Brave seat to take since this cage had what sounded like the bird version of Hannibal Lecter in it.
It was yanking the cloth cover into the crate and kicking and yelling and causing all kinds of ruckus.
(That's right.  I said ruckus.  There was no other word to describe what this thing was doing!)

It's prison guard (the old guy in white) took it around the corner because it was making so much of a distraction.

Turns out it was some sort of vulture.
Ick.

Didn't Abby luck out though?
This beautiful barn owl is what took the perch above her head.
I could tell as it was sitting above her that she could now die a happy girl.  Her life
will have had meaning and is complete.  The poor owl was still in training, so it got rather confused
and flew back behind the stage onto a large curtain rod.  It remained there until the end of the show when they could talk it into going where they wanted it to be.  We learned something new about owls that day.  They said that because their eyes are so large, it takes up so much space in their rather small heads, that they aren't very smart as far as predatory birds go.

Guess the term "bird brain" has some truth to it.
