Wild Horse and Burro Adoption

The kids and I had a chance to attend the Bureau of Land Management's Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Event last week here in Yuma. They thin out the herds that roam the Midwest by catching them, holding them 90 days for vaccinations and needed medications, then finding new homes for them. They were all between 1 and 2 years of age. Some of them were still pretty skittish, others would walk right up to the edge of the stable for attention. Don't get me wrong, they are by no means tame, but they seemed willing to trust. The one with the white nose was really quite sweet.

The burro can be found roaming the desert here and definitely seemed more afraid than the horses. They were so cute that I can see how they find homes for them. These two were my favorites.

The adoption was held at the stables on base and Fred, a friend from church, stopped by to feed and play with his horses. The kids were lucky enough to be invited for a ride! The first one is Hershey, a former Mustang. She was adopted at the age of 2 and is now 5. She is cute as can be and doesn't like to be ignored. She will nudge Fred in the back if he is in the stable too long and doesn't pay attention to her. :) I think she has quite the exotic face.

The next horse is Raz. He is a former Police horse. He LOVES attention and neighs when he feels left out. He definitely makes sure he gets his share of attention! He makes sure of it. You'll notice in these pictures that he sheds like my dog! We came back on Sunday and the kids took turns brushing him.

So I suppose we're one step closer to our rodeo dreams, eh? :)
